How To Check Your Finished Mixing Song

Music recording? Well what’s the point of recording?

Is recording just something to make money while record? Or is it to make a new song?  Audio recording is some to record and listen back to it. I believe music is there to change your thoughts and emotions. You can be listen to Metallica and having interest in learning the solo since you have a drive towards it. But if the song changes and all of a sudden barney and friends start playing, then you maybe like WTF?

So when I was in school taking recording classes, the control rooms we about 10 x 20 with acoustic treatment including a diffuser. But the problem was that the ceiling was about the same height as mine. So my mentality was to think that this is what a recording studio sounded like.

I Was FUCKING WRONG!!!!

When I was interning at a professional recording studio who did plenty of R Kelly’s albums, I played the song Schism from Tool, and as I just stand there next to the console in the center of two monitors, I felt like there was a drum set covering the whole room which the room was probably 16 feet wide from left to right. I felt like a little baby and the song was right over my head getting ready for the verse and going to smash me. Towards the end there is a vocal doing a ping pong effect when an audio is going from left to right. Is this standing position, you would have to turn ur head to follow it. Usually in your sitting position, you’ll think of the ping pong in your head.

Now you maybe thinking, why did you bring this up when you have a home recording studio. Well one day I was listen to music with my neumann monitors and was moving stuff around. When I was in the center of them, I bend down to grab something and when I got up, right in the middle of the two looking straight at the wall, it felt like I was at that actual recording studio. I felt as if I were at a concert. It made it sound as if I had acoustic diffuser making the song diffuse all around the room. And no I don’t have a diffuser.

For people who don’t know about diffuser, they allow certain frequencies bounce different directions all around the room. Without a Diffuser, it makes certain frequency go to certain areas, so when you walk around your room there are dips and peaks or even out of phase which make things more quieter or louder.

And that is the crazy part cause you may not need diffuser to check ur song and all you’ll need is reverb. How long it takes for the sound to bounce off of something and back to your ears which makes it closer or further. Sound doesn’t goes as fast as light so the closer you are the less reverb it needs and the further you are the more reverb.

Now this can apply to any song, shit even by a single instrument. But wait, there’s more!!!! You can take a song your working on and use this technique and figure out how to level your track and where to pan it. At the same time you can use a related song to check it.

All songs that are being mixed should only be done in the sitting position So if you would like to save time and not having to go back and forth to level and pan everything and spend  more time to damage your liver by drinking a lot of hard liquor, there is an app where you can level and pan everything on your phone.

If u want to learn about an audio topics, then let me know. I may know the topic about it, but if I don’t, I’ll look it up. I like to as much as I can about audio or recording.
